Seasonal and temporal intervention of endoparasitic helminths in fresh-water fish Wallago attu

Abstract

Fish represents a major group of organisms which serve as hosts for many parasites, ironically, they are one of the leading causes of mass mortality of fish populations. Freshwater fishes are heavily infected with a variety of helminths. The present study was aimed to check the availability of gastrointestinal parasites of Wallago attu fish in local fish markets of Lucknow in relation to the length and sex of fish. A significant amount of parasitic infection, especially endoparasites helminthes, some cestodes, trematodes and nematodes were observed in the infected fish during the present study.  These parasites may cause great economic loss, hence adequate precautions should be taken into consideration to protect the great value of economic resources in the form of fish and aquaculture.
